Our General Exterior Painting Process
Step 1 - Exterior Painting Setup
The first step of exterior trim painting is to do a safety check and deciding on how to reach all of the surfaces. We typically use ladders when possible and scaffolding for tight areas. In extreme circumstances, we rent boom lifts if there is no other way to access the surfaces. Depending on if we are brushing or spraying the surfaces, we will also cover and mask the surrounding areas
Step 2 - Exterior Surface Preparation (Scraping & Sanding)
Once the surrounding areas are covered up and the ladders & working at heights equipment are in place, we begin prepping the surfaces. Loose old paint is scraped off and all the surfaces are lightly sanded. Its important to note that the purpose of sanding is NOT to remove the old texture but to improve adhesion and feather edges. Existing craters and textures left from years of built-up paint will still remain (unless you decide to strip them - this is a far more involved process).
Step 3 - Exterior Surface Repairs & Priming
After the surfaces haven been cleared of old loose paint and have been sanded down, we repair minor damages such as holes and scratches on the surface. We also caulk cracks to ensure that moisture does not penetrate the surfaces. Bare wooden areas are spot primed to ensure proper adhesion of the finish coat. You will see white spots around the house which is the primer. A full prime is only necessary if the old coating is an oil-based product or if the surfaces are fully bare.
Step 4 - Applying Exteior Paint & Cleaning
The final steps are painting and cleaning. We apply two full finish coats to the surfaces to ensure proper coverage. Depending on the existing colour and what colour the surface is being painted, more than 2 coats may be necessary. Unfortunately it is not always possible to predict how many coats may be required so the standard is to quote for 2 coats. We apply paint using a brush and roller or sprayer depending on the surface and surrounding conditions.
Our Reviews
5/5
Lynn Pawlyshyn

Highly recommend Finesse Finish Painters. John and Ramone were great, taking extra care on the prep work, ensuring all walls were smoothed, sanded and cleansed prior to painting. They completed any needed touch ups and did so in a timely manner. Would definitely use them again!

Exterior Painting FAQ (Toronto)
Q: How long do exterior paint jobs last in Toronto?
A: Exterior paint jobs in Toronto usually last around 5 years before they start to peel or need a maintenance coat. However, this depends on many factors such as the amount of sun and weather exposure. Vertical surfaces that are covered or shaded tend to last longer than surfaces which are uncovered and facing the sun.
Q: How much does exterior painting cost in Toronto?
A: The cost to paint the exterior of a home in Toronto varies and depends on many things. For instance, the amount of prep, number of trim and difficult of access are huge factors when calculating costs. In general, the average cost to paint the exterior of a home in Toronto is about $4500. However, this can range and the only way to be sure is to get an in-person estimate.
Q: When is the best time for exterior painting in Toronto?
A: The exterior painting season in Toronto starts the end of April (or start of May) and lasts until early October. The weather needs to remain above freezing (overnight) and not too wet. Shoulder seasons may be warm enough but the morning dew may not be able to dry out. In the summer, the intense humidity and heat could cause paints to dry too quickly or start to bubble. As such, the best months to paint are May and September when the weather is more mild.
Q: How do you reach high up areas?
A: Ladders are usually sufficient to reach most areas. The longest ladder that is typically available is a 40 foot ladder which can access a three storey house. With that being said, we sometimes have to set up scaffolding if the area is very tight or rent a boom lift if it is unsafe to set up a ladder or scaffold.
Q: Do you prime the surfaces before you paint?
A: We spot prime bare wooden areas to ensure proper adhesion of the finish coat. Paint sticks to paint so it is unnecessary to prime previously painted surfaces. With that being said, if the surface was previously painted with an oil-based product, then we would have to use a conversion primer before painting.
Q: Do you clean exterior surfaces before you paint?
A: A clean surface is probably the most important thing affecting the adhesion of paint and thus the longevity of the paint job. As such, we either pressure wash exterior surfaces or wipe them down with TSP or acetone prior to painting.
Q: Do you have a warranty on your work?
A: We guarantee all of our exterior work for 2 years except for horizontal surfaces that are walked on (ex, floors). If anything peels prematurely, we will come back and fix it.
Q: Does your company have liability insurance?
A: Our company has up to $2,000,000 in liability insurance.
